CURRENT FEES
The City of Asheville residents and businesses will be charged a $14.00 monthly solid waste fee on the combined utility bill. This is the bill that comes every other month with fees for water, stormwater, sewer and solid waste. In 2013, the cost to provide solid waste service to Asheville residents was $5.9M. The total fees collected from residents in the same year generated $1.28M. This fee supports the City’s short term operational costs including fuel in the solid waste vehicles and trash containers. It also funds the long-term waste reduction strategy which in this budget year will pay for:
DETERMINING YOUR COLLECTION DAY
The City of Asheville collects regular household trash once per week. Residents should place containers at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on their collection day, and containers should be removed from the curb no later than 11 p.m. on the same day. SPECIAL SERVICES ASSISTANCE
The City of Asheville has a "special service" policy for residents who are unable to get their trash and/or recyclables to the curb on their collection days. The Code of Ordinances, Chapter 15 Solid Waste Management, Section 15-48 Special Service states: "Hardship cases such as age, disability or infirmity, when confirmed by the Solid Waste Manager may be afforded the special service of refuse carryout and carry-back upon application." ABOUT AUTOMATED COLLECTION
What can be placed in the roll cart containers?
Only bagged household trash can be placed in the roll cart containers. Do not place yard waste, brush or any construction debris in the roll carts. In addition, only 95 gallon roll carts issued by the city can be used with automated collection. Trash left outside the container will not be collected, and containers that are overfilled, blocked or turned the wrong way cannot be emptied.
What can not be placed in the roll cart containers?
Bears and Your TrashAs a resident in bear country, you can avoid attracting bears and prevent conflicts from occurring. There are many things that can be done to minimize or eliminate the chances that bears will get into garbage or become a problem in an area. Implement these solutions as soon as the problem starts - or before problems occur.
How can I get an additional container?
One roll cart has a 95 gallon capacity and will be sufficient for most households. Additional carts can be provided for a monthly fee of $10.0, which is included on water bills. Call (828) 251-1122 for information about getting an additional cart.
Report broken or missing carts
Over time, carts may become damaged or broken. Carts may also go missing when carts are accidentally dropped into the automated trucks or due to neighborhood misunderstandings. Call (828) 251-1122 to report broken or missing carts.
BUNCOMBE COUNTY LANDFILL and TRANSFER STATION
Residents can take their waste items directly to the Buncombe County Landfill or Transfer Station for disposal. For disposal information call Buncombe County at (828) 250-5460.
Collection Schedule
The City of Asheville collects tree limbs, bagged leaves and shrub trimmings separately from other garbage and bulky items. Brush should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday of your pickup week.
Brush Collection
Tree limbs, brush and shrub trimmings must be piled loose at the curb and must be free of other debris. Large volume brush piles, brush and trimmings cut by contractors are not picked up by the sanitation division.

Bagged Leaves Collected Year Round
Bagged leaves are collected twice a month throughout the entire year as part of the City’s bi-weekly brush collection. Place bags or containers at the street by 7 a.m. on Monday of your collection week. When the bags are emptied, they are left for you to reuse again. - Grass Clippings - Homeowners may compost or leave grass on yard to fertilize lawn.
- Garden Waste - Including vines and waste from flower or vegetable garden, i.e., corn husks, etc.
- Medical Waste - Call your medical provider for advice on where to dispose of this material.
- Construction & Building Materials - Bricks, cement, lumber, plaster, roofing material and sheet rock can be taken to the landfill by homeowner. Call (828) 250-5462.
- Auto Parts - Antifreeze, motor filters, scrap parts, batteries and tires. Most stores will take car batteries. Tires can be taken to the landfill by homeowner.
- Hazardous Waste - Any liquid or petroleum products such as motor oil, brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, lead acid batteries, wood preservatives and wood stains, drain and oven cleaners, poison, herbicides, pesticides, etc.

- Place leaves, pine needles, pine cones and other small yard waste in open bags or container mark as "brush".
- Brush needs to be but into 4 foot length and 6 inch diameter.
- Do not place bush in the street or block the sidewalk.
- Please keep brush away from other objects such as, fences, walls, water meters, utility poles, mailboxes, fire hydrants and cars.
- Avoid placing brush under utility lines and tree limbs.
- Thorny trimmings must be in a separate pile.

- If using a container write “leaves” or “brush” on the container for crews to easily identify the container and not confuse it for trash collection.
